Under Graduate Program

(B.Arch) - 5 years

The Bachelor of Architecture (B.Arch) is a five-year, full-time undergraduate programme affiliated to Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) and recognized by the Council of Architecture (CoA), India. Structured across ten semesters, the programme integrates rigorous academic inquiry with hands-on studio-based learning, ensuring a comprehensive understanding of architecture as both a technical discipline and a cultural practice.

At BMSCA D&P, we balance theoretical foundations with practical application. Through design studios, building sciences, construction technology, structures, history and theory, environmental studies, professional practice, and research-based learning, students develop the ability to conceive, design, and execute built environments that respond to social, environmental, technological, and contextual challenges.

The programme emphasizes critical thinking, creativity, sustainability, and ethical professional practice. With exposure to contemporary tools, materials, and construction methodologies, along with an understanding of traditional knowledge systems, students are trained to approach architecture holistically-combining aesthetic sensibility with technical competence and contextual responsiveness.

Graduates of the B.Arch programme emerge as responsible professionals equipped to contribute meaningfully to the shaping of sustainable, inclusive, and resilient built environments.

Semester 1 – Introduction to Design

Introduces the fundamentals of design thinking through principles of form, space, scale, and universality of design. Concludes with the design of a small monofunctional space, emphasizing human-centric thinking and spatial clarity.

Semester 2 – Form, Function, and Human Scale

Focuses on experimentation with form and function through small-scale architectural programs. The semester culminates in the design of a simple program, exploring ergonomics, circulation, and spatial organization.

Semester 3 – Place and Space

Explores the relationship between architecture, context, and meaning. Emphasizes the making of place through spatial sequencing, cultural responses, and experiential qualities of space.

Semester 4 – Housing

Engages with housing as a social, spatial, and urban concern. Explores dwelling typologies, density, community, and the relationship between private and collective spaces.

Semester 5 – Public Architecture

Focuses on architecture in the public realm, addressing institutions and civic buildings. Emphasizes accessibility, user diversity, symbolic expression, and the role of architecture in shaping public life.

Semester 6 – Campus Architecture

Explores the design of campuses as integrated environments comprising multiple buildings and open spaces. Emphasizes spatial hierarchy, movement networks, landscape integration, and institutional identity.

Semester 7 – Performative Architecture

Investigates architecture as a responsive and experiential system. Focuses on performance in terms of climate, structure, technology, movement, and user interaction.

Semester 8 - Architecture in an Urban Environment

Engages with architecture at an urban scale, responding to complex city conditions. Explores context, regulations, infrastructure, public interface, and the relationship between buildings and the urban fabric.

Semester 9 - Architectural Thesis

Focuses on independent research and formulation of a design thesis. Emphasizes problem identification, critical inquiry, and development of a coherent architectural position.

Semester 10 - Professional Training

Provides exposure to architectural practice through hands-on professional training. Enables students to understand real-world processes, ethics, collaboration, and responsibilities of the profession.
